Omschrijving
Dawes Super Galaxy, circa late 80's, with many upgrades and updated components, overall a lovely bike to ride--it feels equally at ease on the coastal roads out to North Berwick and tackling the cobbled hills in Edinburgh. It's pretty well dialled in, shifting and braking nicely.
Features:
The frame is hand-built in England of Reynolds 531ST tubing, designed to handle loaded touring trips, with 531 fork tubes. Frame in average condition for its age, with some scratches and a ding to the seat tube, but nothing that affects the integrity of the steel.
Top tube measures 59cm, center headtube to to center seat tube, and seat tube measures 60cm, top to center of crank.
Rear wheel and Shimano 6-speed freewheel, both new, for better hill-climbing, new KMC chain with power link, recent Shimano 105 derailer shifting smoothly, though with some scratches. Downtube Shimano shifters in friction mode. Triple Sakae chainset in good shape.
New Soma moustache handlebars, which give several grip options, with new Cinelli gel cork tape. ART stem for a more upright, comfortable riding position.
Suntour XC self-energising brakes, Weinmann front brakes.
Vittoria Voyager Hyper tyres, 700c x 38 fast-rolling and reliable, showing virtually no wear. The bicycle rolling resistance blog rated these lower rolling resistant than Schwalbe Marathon Supremes.
Vavert full mudguards, with SKS security clips to breakaway in case anything gets caught in the guards and blocks the wheel.
Comfortable WTB saddle currently, though you may want to switch to your favourite leather saddle.
Currently has some spd pedals, but I could switch to non-clipless if preferred.
The tyres are really the highest volume size that can fit the frame, so the clearance at the chainstays is very close, and the rear hub has standard nuts instead of a quick release to keep it very steady.
Also included are front and rear racks, which fit the Super Galaxy specifically, though I found it slightly awkward to mount them along with these mudguards.
I've enjoyed this bike a lot, will be a bit sad to see it go, and would likely be keeping it long-term if not for limited storage space, and the fact that the frame is just slightly short for me. The 531 steel frame, great tyres and newer components are very comfortable and reliable, and it's a real bargain at the price. It will make a great tourer or all-around bike.
